This complete kitchen remodel – part of extensive renovations to the house, including a new basement family room, office, and climate-controlled wine closet, new bathrooms, and new landscaping in the backyard–was an exercise in functional, classic design.  The existing kitchen–awkwardly laid-out and a poor fit with the traditional language of the house–was completely removed. The new arrangement is a generous U-shape, with the island facing a casual space for family dining; a tall cabinet houses a large flat-screen for movie-watching and game-playing. The owners are avid cooks with a large collection of cookbooks, and the cabinets were designed and appliances selected with that in mind.  Their tastes were a happy match to the house, and led to the neutral palette of white cabinets, warm gray tiles, and soapstone counters; they allowed themselves more room to play in a new hall bath, with its vivid green wall tile and gold-toned fixtures.
