The starting point for this Oakland project was a classic bungalow featuring many authentic details, but suffering from a cramped layout and low ceilings throughout the second floor. The design solution entailed extensive work to the back half of the house, including raising the roof several feet.

Previously divided into a breakfast nook, laundry area, and guest room, the back of the house is now an open space for daily family life. Sliding 16-foot-wide patio doors bring in natural light and incorporate the deck and yard into a single indoor-outdoor space.
Upstairs, a generous bay window in the master bedroom overlooks the backyard. The master bath vanity is a custom design developed with the owners.
